This Head of Legal (APAC) role is to lead the legal function for the company, working directly with the executive team and senior management and reporting to the COO. This role would suit a senior lawyer with extensive private practice experience and/or in-house expertise to move into a Head of Legal position and play a crucial role in providing legal support across the business internationally, as well as leading the legal function for the company across the Asia Pacific region.

The Opportunity
This Head of Legal position is a significant appointment for the company, acting as its key legal counsel for the APAC region, reporting to the COO and working closely with senior management. This is a crucial role with an international remit as well as responsibility for leading and managing the legal function for the company in the APAC region, ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations while supporting the company’s continued growth, development and success. The successful applicant will have strong commercial acumen and ideally have in-depth legal knowledge of the entire project life cycle across a range of assets. They will possess the necessary skills and expertise to be able to understand legal documentation as well as identify and manage the risks and liabilities associated with the company’s worldwide asset portfolio.
The successful applicant will have a demonstrated passion for, and experience in, the natural resources sector. Responsibilities include:
- Legal Advisory: Leading the legal function (APAC) for the company, with the remit including corporate and commercial legal matters and advice, complex commercial contract negotiations including construction and energy agreements, and construction, projects, energy and litigation legal matters and advice.
- Team Management: Responsible for the management of a legal team across multiple jurisdictions, providing leadership and support to the lawyers.
- Project Development: Provide legal and commercial advice to the business on new and ongoing exploration and project initiatives across multiple jurisdictions.
- Regulatory Compliance: Monitor and review changes in relevant law and regulations that may impact the company’s operations and implement compliance strategies accordingly.
- Risk Management: Identify legal risks and potential liabilities, develop and implement risk management strategies.
- Management of External Counsel: Managing external law firms within approved budget, including negotiating for favourable economic terms for the company.
Key Requirements
The required experience and expertise for this Head of Legal (APAC) role includes:
- A minimum of 9 years post-graduate experience in private practice and/or in-house, with at least 2 years’ experience in a senior leadership role within an in-house team or highly regarded law firm (Head of Legal, Deputy General Counsel, Special Counsel or Partner).
- Significant experience (at least 3 years) specialising in energy & resources and/or projects and construction.
- Extensive knowledge of projects, energy and commercial law, environmental & planning regulations and regulatory compliance related to the resources industry as well as a passion for the resources sector.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to work collaboratively and effectively with executives and senior management.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capable of communicating complex legal matters to non-legal stakeholders including senior executive management.
- Strong commercial acumen and willingness to take the lead on ad hoc business requirements, as well as be flexible to travel as and when needed.
- Tertiary qualifications in law.
